Choosing the Right Coffee Grind: A Guide from Darkseason Coffee

Choosing the Right Coffee Grind: A Guide from Darkseason Coffee

A great coffee starts long before the first sip. The quality of the beans, the roast profile, and the freshness all play an important role, but one factor that is often overlooked is the grind size.

Using the wrong grind can leave a coffee tasting weak, sour, bitter, or simply not performing as it should. At Darkseason Coffee, we offer three grind options to help you get the very best from your chosen brewing method: Espresso, AeroPress, and Cafetière.

In this guide, we'll explain the differences between each grind and help you choose the right option for your coffee machine or brewing setup.

Why Does Grind Size Matter?

When hot water passes through coffee grounds, it extracts flavour, aroma, and oils from the beans. The size of the coffee particles determines how quickly this extraction takes place.

A finer grind exposes more surface area to the water, leading to faster extraction. A coarser grind slows the process down.

Different brewing methods use different contact times between water and coffee, which is why choosing the correct grind is so important.

Espresso Grind

Our Espresso grind is the finest grind we offer.

Designed specifically for espresso machines, this grind allows water to pass through the coffee under high pressure while still extracting a rich and balanced shot.

Best For:

  • Traditional espresso machines

  • Bean-to-cup machines with a bypass chute for pre-ground coffee

  • Sage espresso machines

  • Gaggia espresso machines

  • De'Longhi espresso machines

  • Rancilio espresso machines

What to Expect:

  • Rich body

  • Concentrated flavour

  • Thick crema

  • Excellent performance in milk-based drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes

Not Recommended For:

  • Cafetières

  • French presses

  • Percolators

Using espresso-ground coffee in these brewing methods can lead to over-extraction and excessive sediment in the cup.

AeroPress Grind

Our AeroPress grind sits between espresso and cafetière, offering excellent versatility.

This medium-fine grind is designed to extract flavour efficiently during the AeroPress's relatively short brewing time while still producing a clean and balanced cup.

Best For:

  • AeroPress

  • Clever Dripper

  • Pour-over brewers

  • V60

  • Kalita Wave

  • Chemex

  • Some filter coffee machines

What to Expect:

  • Clean flavour profile

  • Balanced sweetness

  • Good clarity of tasting notes

  • Lower sediment than a cafetière

Can It Be Used Elsewhere?

One of the advantages of our AeroPress grind is its flexibility.

Many customers successfully use it in:

  • Filter coffee machines

  • Pour-over brewers

  • Drippers

  • Some percolators

While it will work in a percolator, a slightly coarser grind is traditionally preferred. Expect a stronger, fuller-bodied cup if using AeroPress grind in a percolator.

Cafetière Grind

Our Cafetière grind is the coarsest grind available from Darkseason Coffee.

Designed for immersion brewing, this grind allows coffee to steep for several minutes without becoming overly bitter or muddy.

Best For:

  • Cafetières

  • French presses

  • Camping coffee pots

  • Stovetop percolators

  • Electric percolators

  • Cold brew coffee

What to Expect:

  • Full-bodied flavour

  • Rich mouthfeel

  • Minimal bitterness

  • Reduced sediment compared to finer grinds

Why Coarse?

Cafetières use a metal mesh filter rather than a paper filter. A coarse grind prevents excessive fines passing through into your cup and helps maintain a smooth drinking experience.
